Description

The Mauna Loa K-Coronagraph observed this CME on March 30, 2024. This CME is accelerating rapidly in the KCor field of view. The last observation was taken at 22:48:09 UT when the CME was at 2.16 solar radii. The best fit to the trajectory (see plot below) was the 2^nd order fit which gave an acceleration of 463 +/- 72 m/s² and a speed of 748 k/s at 2.16 solar radii. This CME was observed by LASCO as a partial halo and shows a deceleration of -2.6 m/s² in LASCO.

These are the first observations from MLSO since Nov 25, 2022. MLSO erupted a few days later and destroyed a significant part of the upper MLSO access road and power lines. Currently the only way to reach the site is by helicopter. Observers and a generator were flown to the site to observe for the Parker Solar Probe perihelion #19. The current schedule for the new road completion is April 2025 – after which MLSO will reopen for nominal observations.

MLSO OBSERVING DAY June 12, 2013. CME begins ~June 13 01:06 UT

The Mauna Loa K-Coronagraph observed a fast, wide CME beginning June 13 2022 ~01:06 UT in the northeast. It was initially a very slow rising loop for a few hours and then rapidly accelerated into a fast, bright, wide loop as seen in the composite image movie showing NASA AIA EUV composites (blue/green disk), Mauna Loa K-Cor (b/w images) and LASCO C2 (red images).

The first trajectory plot shows the slow rise in the CME. The second trajectory plot omits the early phase of the slow rise. The data are fit with 3 polynomials: 1st order (constant velocity), 2nd-order (constant acceleration), and 3rd-order (acceleration increases (decrease) linearly). The first-order (constant velocity) fit is poor in both trajectories. The data clearly show a rapid rise in acceleration at approximately 03:10 UT. The fit on the right shows a final speed of 1137 k/s in the K-Cor field-of-view from the 3rd-order polynomial fit computed at the last data point in the trajectory.

The Mauna Loa K-Coronagraph observed 4 CMEs on August 30, 2022. K-Cor began observations at 17:11 UT and observed the tail-end of a CME in the southeast at ~155 degrees position angle (PA). This CME was recorded by the LASCO C2 coronagraph beginning ~15:12 UT. K-Cor also observed a CME in progress in the southwest at ~240 degrees PA. The outer edge of this 2 nd CME was still in the K-Cor field-of-view (FOV) at ~2 solar radii. This was followed by a bright structure that appeared at~17:42 UT in the very low corona at ~250 degrees. This bright feature erupted and formed the core of the 3 rd , and fastest, CME of the day. This loop-cavity-core CME was estimated to be moving at 970 km/sec in the K-Cor FOV by the time it reached 2.65 solar radii. It had an acceleration estimated at 567 m/sec^2. The plot shows the K- Cor time-height measurements and the estimates of speed and acceleration. The data gap in the K-Cor time-height plot is due to clouds moving over the observatory. This fast CME was first observed by LASCO at 18:12. The speed of the CME in the LASCO FOV was estimated at ~1400 km/sec. The 4 th CME of the day was located in the northeast at ~70 degrees PA and was first seen by K-Cor at ~21:13 UT.

The fast CME in the southwest encountered the Solar Orbiter spacecraft as Orbiter was approaching Venus for a gravity-assist fly-by. The in-situ instruments on Solar Orbiter recorded elevated levels of solar energetic particles. On March 10, 2022 at ~17:41 a CME was seen emerging over the north pole in K-Cor white light coronal observations as illustrated in the K-Cor subtraction movies above (with additional links at bottom of page). The loop-shaped CME accelerated through the K-Cor field-of-view (FOV) reaching a speed of 330 km/sec and an acceleration of 60 m/s2 by 19:24 UT at a height of 2.7 solar radii as shown in the time vs. height plot. The CME widened as it accelerated outward. The CME width was measured at 1.7 solar radii. It increased from ~53 degrees wide at 18:48 UT to ~66 degrees at 19:24 UT.

A fainter loop with outflow was seen in K-Cor data to emerge from the west limb overlapping in time with the north pole CME.

AIA observations show the eruption of the large active region in the northern hemisphere just west of central meridian (see figure). The red circle in the AIA 193 Angstrom subtraction figure shows the eruption of the AR and solar dimmings strongly associated with CMEs. A CME is also seen in AIA on the west limb as indicated by the red arrow in the figure and is clearly visible in AIA movies.

The CME was observed by LASCO and STEREO COR2 (see figure below). These observations show one very wide CME, suggesting the outflow from the west limb and the north pole CME were either one very large CME or merged to appear as one event. The top of the CME is flattened and warped, strongly suggesting the presence of a shock.

A C-class GOES X-ray flare with a hard X-ray signal is seen during this time, as shown in the figure below. GOES proton flux show a very slight rise in >=10MeV protons. However, the Solar Orbiter team reports a large solar energetic particle event (SEP) associated with this CME. Solar Orbiter was at 0.44 AU and well-situated relative to the Earth-Sun line as shown in the STEREO figure marking the location of various spacecraft (STEREO, Solar Orbiter, Parker Solar Probe and BepiColombo) relative to the inner planets.

A loop-shaped coronal mass ejection (CME) erupts over the east limb of the Sun on Feb 8, 2015 as seen in K-Cor. Note the small active prominence that appears (and then disappears) just over the occulter near the start of the CME. This CME was also recorded by the LASCO C2 coronagraph.

Nice 3-part CME with prominence core in east. Small mound rises into corona south of and prior to CME then stalls at ~1.2 Rsun. CME is well observed by LASCO C2.

This movie was made with K-Cor images at a 5 minute time cadence. K-Cor images are available at 15 second time cadence from the Mauna Loa web page.

A large, twisted CME erupts from the northwest limb, as seen by Mk4. The associated prominence was seen by PICS.
